Himalayan glacier collapse floods the Nepal–Tibet border
- A glacier high above the Lhende Khola river on the Tibetan side collapsed Wednesday morning, sending a wall of water, ice and debris down into Nepal's Rasuwa district on the northern border with China.
- At least 389 people were killed in Nepal and three in Tibet, with more than 1,400 still missing as of Thursday — roughly 910 of the missing in Nepal and about 560 on the Tibetan side. Earlier in the recovery the confirmed count ran far lower — about 165 dead reported Wednesday, with figures climbing by the hour.
- The surge pushed down the Lhende Khola into the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, which rose by as much as nine metres (about 30 feet) in half an hour, washed away at least 19 bridges and roughly 40 km (25 miles) of roads, and destroyed homes, hydropower plants and border infrastructure.
- The US Geological Survey said the shaking first read as a magnitude-4.4 earthquake was the landslide itself, registering as a 5.2 seismic event — no earthquake triggered it.
- Americans were among those reported missing — put at 33 by some outlets and as many as 65 by others, a count that moved through the day.
