A magnitude-7.7 quake off Indonesia's Flores Island has killed at least 47, with hardest-hit Nagekeo still cut off by landslides and thousands awaiting aid
- The quake struck off Flores, in East Nusa Tenggara, around 6am local time on Aug 15; a sub-one-meter tsunami warning was issued and later lifted.
- The death toll has climbed from early counts to at least 47–48 and is expected to rise.
- Hundreds of buildings are damaged.
- Rescue teams had not yet reached Nagekeo regency, where landslides blocked roads and cut communications.
- Thousands of evacuees are awaiting aid.
Spin:
- Axis of division: not partisan — an early official count versus the rising on-the-ground tally, a question of count provenance and timing.
- Lower-count telling: an earlier same-day wire line still carried "toll jumps to 20."
- Higher-count telling: the converging Aug 15–16 reports of at least 47–48, expected to climb.
Omissions
- No source sets the count trajectory (20 rising to 47–48) side by side against a single official register such as Indonesia's disaster-management agency (BNPB) or its meteorology and geophysics agency (BMKG).
- Displacement and damage totals are thin this early across all coverage.
- Whether the higher counts include landslide deaths in Nagekeo is unstated.
Inaccuracies

What it could mean
- Take "47 dead" as the figure, and the counter is officials' warning the toll will climb once Nagekeo is reached.
- Assume total catastrophe, and the counter is that the tsunami stayed under a meter and the warning was lifted.
- The count is a floor, not a settled figure; the divergence is timing and provenance, not slant.
