Sudan's health system collapses as famine spreads in Darfur
- UN and NGO assessments describe roughly 80% of Sudan's health facilities damaged or out of service, more than 1,600 health workers and patients killed in attacks on health care, and famine confirmed or exceeding thresholds in Darfur areas including El Fasher, Kadugli, Um Baru and Kernoi.
- More than 1.2 million people have left El Fasher since late 2025.
- A separate WHO-sourced wire figure puts 37% of facilities "out of service" in 2026 — a narrower "completely non-functional" measure that is not the same as the broader "damaged or out of service" ~80%.
- Cholera, measles and diarrhea are spreading in displacement camps that lack safe water and sanitation.
Spin:
- Axis of division: humanitarian agencies raising the alarm versus the near-absence of major-power political attention — the story is under-covered by US outlets relative to its scale, not fought over on left/right lines.
- Agency telling: a health system that has largely stopped functioning and famine spreading to new areas.
Omissions
- Which belligerent — the Rapid Support Forces or the army — is responsible for specific health-facility attacks is stated variably and often left out.
- The two facility figures (the narrower ~37% "out of service" and the broader ~80% "damaged or out of service") are not defined side by side in any single source, so they read as a contradiction when they measure different things.
- The near-total absence of major-power political engagement, relative to the scale of the emergency, is itself absent from most coverage.

What it could mean
- Read Sudan as a stabilized stalemate, and the counter is famine spreading to new Darfur areas and a health system that has largely stopped functioning.
- Read any single facility figure as authoritative, and the counter is that the ~37% and ~80% figures measure different things and neither is dated precisely here.
- Documented: humanitarian agencies publish these assessments to mobilize donor response.
- Inferred: the scale-versus-attention gap reflects that a war with no major-power stake draws little sustained Western coverage.
- That inference is wrong if a major power attaches a concrete political or aid initiative to the crisis.
