Colombia's magnitude-7.4 quake — its strongest this century — has killed close to 290, with 379 still missing

• Counts through mid-week put the toll near 287 dead, about 3,970 injured, and 379 missing, with building collapses across Pereira, Cali, Quibdó, Manizales and Armenia and several airports suspended.
• The Aug 10 quake was the strongest in Colombia this century.
• Early counts ran far lower and climbed through the week — 132 on Aug 10 in one account, "at least 111" the same day in another, 160-plus later — as recovery crews reached collapsed sites.
• Official tallies, media counts, and missing-person lists still diverge; the dead figure is a floor, not a settled total.

Spin:

• Axis of division: not partisan — official count versus media tally versus missing-person registry, a provenance split.
• The reachable coverage skews toward international and center-to-left US outlets; no clearly right-of-center telling surfaced.

Omissions

• No source shows the official, media, and missing-list tallies side by side.
• Aid-flow and government-response specifics vary by outlet, with no consolidated account.
• With 379 still missing, the count is explicitly not final — a point some settled-sounding tallies drop.

What it could mean

• If a "slow or callous government" read hardened early, the counter is that regional aid arrived and rescue operations continued.
• If you assume the toll is settled, the counter is that 379 remain missing, so the figure will move.
• The divergence across tallies is provenance and timing, not slant.
