Colombia earthquake, day four: the dead pass 265 while the "missing" count ranges from a few hundred to more than 4,000
- Monday's magnitude-7.4 quake — the most powerful to hit Colombia in decades — has killed at least 265, with the latest single-outlet count at 281; nearly 4,000 injured.
- The missing count is where the reports diverge most: official confirmed-missing figures run in the hundreds (about 379), while reported and registry lists ran past 2,700 and then 4,100.
- More than 12,000 homes were destroyed and 74,000-plus damaged; 86 buildings collapsed and seven airports suspended operations, with five capital cities on red alert.
- Regional aid has begun arriving; rescue operations continue four days on.
Spin:
- Axis of division: the national government's response and official tallies versus local officials, affected communities, and the registry lists that put the missing far higher.
- Official framing: a controlled death toll and an active rescue-and-relief operation.
- The view from affected towns and the missing-person registries is thinner in the coverage and puts the human scale much higher.
Omissions
- No source sets the competing counts side by side: dead ~265–281, official missing ~379, reported/registry missing ~2,700–4,100.
- Aid-flow and government-response specifics vary by outlet; a clearly right-of-center telling did not surface — a spread limit.

What it could mean
- The death toll is not final: with the missing count ranging into the thousands, the confirmed dead is a floor, not a settled number.
- Regional aid arriving cuts against an early "callous government" read; the wide missing-count gap cuts against assuming the toll is settled.
- Unresolved until the official, media, and registry counts are reconciled.
